I’m coming around the curve and the sound of the RPM isn’t climbing - I’m maxed out! My eyes are focused (not on what’s in front of me) but what’s coming into the view ahead. My peripheral vision is watching beside me, yet my focus is looking ahead to my 2 o’clock position where I’m going to be in 2 seconds. Why? I’m going 120mph around this curve!
I’m locked onto the steering wheel with force as I hold the curve to the right, knowing that once I make it through Turn 2 - I’ll be braking and downshifting in preparation for Turn 3. As I straighten out, I move towards the outside and ride the edge of the track past my marker. Immediately, I lift the throttle and downshift with a little braking and look right. Target acquired! I see the “Apex” of Turn 3 come into view. Navigating from the outside, to the apex and now accelerating back to the outside - I just made this turn a little straighter and now I’m back under full power.
I’ve heard from some old school racers that they didn’t have a speedometer because if they saw how fast they were going they would freak out and slow down. Most people are not actual racers but love to feel the force of acceleration when the light turns green on their way to work or school. The average “Bucket Lists” that people create don't have a box for; “I ran a real Race Car on a real Race Track!” This is because they don’t know where to look or how to make it happen and feel they need hundreds of thousands of dollars in sponsor money. Wrong!
For less than $500 and professional classroom training, this can be done in the same day! Brainerd International Raceway is home to the BIR Performance Driving School that shows you the fundamentals of handling a high performance car on a high performance track. With powerpoint presentations and aerial images of when and where to accelerate and decelerate in the corners… It’s the ride-alongs that take you to the track for familiarity of what you will experience once behind the wheel.
After some classroom testing and passenger track time, you’ll eventually be fitted for a full-body racing suit and helmet that fits you. The time has come as everyone is instructed to head out to the cars and wait. With professionals helping you into the cockpits and securing your safety harnesses, you await the signals to fire up and follow the pace car. For a couple laps, they let you learn the feel of your machine and incrementally increase lap speeds until that’s when it happens…
The pace car has pulled off and the green flag drops. The entrance into this story is now your own experience!
